Root Canal Treatment
What is root canal treatment ?
Root canal treatment (‘Endodontics’) is required when the blood or nerve supply of the tooth - known as the pulp is infected through decay or injury. You may not feel any pain in the early stages of the infection. In some cases, your tooth could darken in colour which may mean that the nerve of the tooth has died (or is dying). This would need root canal treatment.
Why is root canal treatment needed ?
When pulp becomes infected, the infection may spread through the root canal system of the tooth which may eventually lead to an abscess (pus collection). The symptoms of an abscess can range from dull ache to severe pain and the tooth may have pain when you bite. If root canal treatment (RCT) is not carried out, the infection will spread and the tooth may need to be taken out.
What does it involve ?
The treatment involves removal of all infection from the root canal. Root canal treatment is a skilled and time-consuming procedure. Most courses of treatment will involve two or more visits to your dentist. At first appointment, a small hole is created in the tooth so that all of the infected areas can be removed. The dental pulp is removed to seal up the hole and area where the dental pulp used to be which is typically done using rubber like substance called gutta-percha. At Monarch Dental Care, at a later visit we will then use a filling or crown in order to further strengthen and protect the damaged tooth.
How safe is the tooth after treatment ?
Yes. As a dead tooth is more brittle, it may be necessary to restore the tooth with a crown to provide extra support and strength to the tooth.
What are the chances of recurrence ?
Root canal treatment is usually very successful. However, if the infection comes back the treatment can be repeated. If inflammation persists at the tip of the root, surgery can be carried out to remove part of the root, clean the area and put in a filling. This procedure is known as an ‘apicectomy’.
